Contents
Per 5 mL syr Fe elemental (Fe sulfate 149.34 mg) 30 mg, vit B1 10 mg, vit B6 10 mg, vit B12 50 mcg. Per mL oral drops Fe elemental (Fe sulfate 74.64 mg) 15 mg, vit B6 5 mg, vit B1 10 mg, vit B12 25 mcg, folic acid 10 mcg
Indications/Uses
Prevention & treatment of Fe deficiency anemia in infants & childn.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Syr Supplemental (prophylactic) dose Equiv to RDA: 10-15 mg daily. Childn 7-12 yr 2.5 mL, 2-6 yr 2.5 mL, to be taken once daily. Therapeutic dose 3 mg/kg/day in 3-4 divided doses for approx 4-6 mth to reverse uncomplicated Fe deficiency anemia. Childn 7-12 yr 5 mL, 2-6 yr 2.5 mL, to be taken tid. Oral drops Supplemental dose Term infant 1 mg/kg/day. Max: 15 mg/day. To start no later than 4 mth of age & to continue at least through the remainder of the 1st yr of life. Preterm infant 2 mg/kg/day. Max: 15 mg/day. To start no later than 2 mth of age & to continue at least through the remainder of the 1st yr of life. Therapeutic dose 3 mg/kg/day in 3-4 divided doses for 4-6 mth. Childn 1-7 yr 1 mL, 6-12 mth 0.75-1 mL, 4-<6 mth 0.5 mL, to be taken tid. Supplemental (prophylactic) dose 3 mg/kg/day in 3-4 divided doses for 4-6 mth. Childn 1-7 yr 1 mL, 6-12 mth 0.75-1 mL, 4-<6 mth 0.5 mL, to be taken once daily.
Administration
Should be taken on an empty stomach: Take between meals. May be taken w/ meals to reduce GI discomfort.
Contraindications
Primary hemochromatosis, peptic ulcer, regional enteritis or ulcerative colitis.
Special Precautions
Do not use to treat hemolytic anemias unless an Fe deficient state also exists. Do not administer >6 mth, parenteral Fe w/ oral Fe, patients receiving repeated blood transfusions. Caution in administration in patients w/ undiagnosed anemia.
Adverse Reactions
GI irritation & abdominal pain w/ nausea & vomiting. Diarrhea, constipation. May cause temporary staining of teeth. Dark stools. Decreased vit B12 serum conc in prolonged folic acid therapy.
Drug Interactions
May decrease Fe absorption w/ antacids. Diminished absorption w/ tetracyclines. Delayed response w/ chloramphenicol. Antagonism of the hematopoietic response to folic acid in concurrent administration of chloramphenicol & folic acid. May decrease absorption of levodopa w/ carbidopa, methyldopa, penicillamine & some quinolones (ciprofloxacin, norfloxacin, ofloxacin).
